Bishops' Role in Counteracting Coarseness

http://westernperspective.blogspot.com/

One good effect of episcopal sanctions against politicians is that they correct errors that are being foisted upon the unwary in society by greedy unscrupulous fools. The politicians and their apologists try to make it appear that the Church is too authoritarian and against liberty. In truth, greed and other sins deprive man of his freedom. Like the federal bailouts, the lies put forth by government have to be so big and fantastic so as to sway the gullible masses.

It would be well to heed the advice of the bishops on matters of faith and morals affecting the affairs of state.

Extraterrestrial Possibilities

http://westernperspective.blogspot.com/

The Vatican's recent conference on the possibility of extraterrestrial life opens up a new way of thinking about man's place in the universe. Science may be on the verge of discovering microbial life beyond earth's limits within our solar system. Such a discovery would greatly increase the odds of intelligent life existing somewhere beyond.

Apart from the possibility of a war of the worlds, this allows for appreciating man's inherent limitations as a creature, and the great gift of freedom which God gave to mankind in creating man in His own image and likeness. Man's eternal life is verified by recent evolutionary theory which demonstrates that there is a direction from the simple and material to the more complex and spiritual, culminating in the development of human consciousness on earth.

If intelligent beings do exist beyond earth's bounds, they will certainly not be endowed with the gift of an immortal soul as we humans are. Their intelligence will be a highly refined animal intelligence, and will be specialized to adapt to different environmental conditions within different locations in the various galaxies on planets which have similar conditions to our own. It will then be the challenge of our posterity to conquer, milk these intelligent beings and harvest their brains for our own well being.

More importantly for today is to view the conditions on earth with these possibilities in mind, allowing us to see how powerless and insignificant we are as creatures. Thus, it will become possible to resolve human conflicts without resorting to force and violence. For example, we can implement a military exit from Afghanistan without suffering dire consequences just as the Russians did in February of 1989.

Was W More of a Liability?

http://westernperspective.blogspot.com/

Historians are now beginning to reexamine the role of Sir Winston Churchill in taking down the British Empire. While none of us can say for sure what effect the Bush presidencies have or will have on America, it is worthwhile to look at the track record.

George H. W. Bush by all accounts got America into the first Gulf War over what was essentially a disputed piece of real estate known as Kuwait, and over the alleged rape of Kuwaiti women by Iraqi men. While there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein was a mean, oppressive dictator who used poison gas against the Kurds and his enemies in Iran, and who quelled public dissent through torture and assassinations, was there really a valid reason to send troops to fight against Iraq in 1990-1991?

Before terrorism became a commonplace, household word, America had the dubious luxury to defend the ideals of freedom throughout the world using our military might. This essentially is what got us bogged down in an unwinnable war in Vietnam, although there was never any serious threat of the war spilling over onto American soil. Today, America no longer has that luxury to go to war on behalf of Israel and other client states. The costs are just too great.

Today, the terms "necessary" and "discretionary" as applied to wars have become all but obsolete, and we should stop using them. War is always a losing proposition. There are times when a nation must take defensive action in self-defense, or in defense of others against an aggressor. However, the decision to go to war is never properly made as something necessary in the sense of being determined by evolution. Man always has a choice, and our leaders must take full responsibility when they commit our boys and girls to fight overseas. Likewise, wars are never discretionary in the sense that one can make a decision based upon a cost-benefit analysis. Those who start wars as a matter of personal discretion should be held fully accountable for all losses sustained on both sides.

So, the question is, did George W. Bush's term of office, in which we went to war full scale to topple Saddam, bring about better or worse results overall for America? This question is separate from whether voters did the right thing in electing President Bush because of his pro-life commitment.

We have fought long enough. It is time to come home from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Race, Ethnicity, Gender Should Never Be a Factor

http://westernperspective.blogspot.com/

A republic is founded upon the idea of equality among individual citizens. Each citizen should have an equal chance to get ahead in the world. This precludes preferences based upon other criteria such as race, ethnicity and gender.

The President has every right to appoint whomsoever he wants within his administration based upon whatever criteria. We must be vigilant to make sure that his appointees do not become themselves little despots and impose improper standards which take away our liberty and freedom. It is our duty as citizens to oppose foolhardy judicial appointments.

Can One Be Sober without Being Overly Somber?

http://westernperspective.blogspot.com/

The Devil never makes good on his promises. Those who choose the seductions of evil become enmeshed in something like a gigantic Ponzi scheme. Someone always gets burned in the end. Sobriety is essentially a choice to avoid excess. For some, this may take the form of abstinence. For others, it may mean giving up something occasionally. Each person has limits set by God built into the constitutional being. When practiced diligently, sobriety becomes a virtue. Somberness can also be taken to extremes. Sobriety gives one the freedom to live in the real world, not a world of one's own choosing.
