During the Irish Tithe War from 1831 to 1836, one British colonial officer grimly observed that it was costing the Crown "a shilling to collect tuppence" in unpaid back tithes. This was just a decade or so before my paternal ancestors left Eire for America.
Perhaps there is a lesson for us today, both in terms of government overreaching into the religious realm, and in overextending our military resources in foreign interventions. Something to think about.
