Newt Gingrich's three marriages may be legitimate within the context of Catholic moral theology. His first marriage at age 19 was to his high school geometry teacher, many years his senior. It was apparently the result of immature infatuation although two daughters were born of the marriage. The second marriage occurred when wife number one had terminal cancer and Newt thought that he needed a new wife to be elected president. Again, this was probably not based on a true loving commitment on his part. The third marriage was to a staff member who had been his mistress during his marriage to wife number two who had developed MS. In any case, wife number one had already died. Subsequently, Newt converted to Catholicism, the religion of wife number three.
