If either Gingrich or Romney wins the Republican nomination, Ron Paul would likely run for president as a third party candidate. What effect will this have on the general election next year?
Right now, Ron Paul is garnering about 8% in opinion polls of likely Republican voters. He probably has even greater support among Independents.
If Newt Gingrich wins the Republican nomination and then beats Barack Obama, we could reasonably expect war with Iran sometime during his administration. This would be a victory for the Washington chicken hawks.
If Mitt Romney wins the nomination and then beats Obama, we could expect crushing economic sanctions imposed against Iran, which would only hurt the poor and middle class in Iran and harden Iran's anti-American and anti-Israeli sentiment. It would still be against Iran's national interest to possess nuclear arms. However, since Romney is known for changing his positions on vital issues, we would probably not go to war with Iran, but rather reach an agreement with Iran for Iranian oil and assisting Iran to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Ron Paul's candidacy could conceivably preclude a Republican victory in 2012 guaranteeing Obama a second term in office, as Glen Beck predicts will happen. In that case, Iran would likely develop a nuclear device even if Israel foolhardily attacks Iran to destroy Iran's nuclear capability. Never underestimate Israel's stubborn stupidity.
