How many times has we heard on mainstream television news reports that Sandusky's alleged sexual misconduct was not reported to police? In fact, police investigations of Sandusky's alleged actions were conducted in 1998, and the case was then referred to Centre County DA Ray Gricar, who determined that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute. Following this investigation, Sandusky RETIRED as defensive coordinator at Penn State at age 55. He kept an office there and continued to have access to the showers, not unreasonable for a person who was never charged with a sex crime. If there was no basis to prosecute Sandusky in 1998, there was no reason to keep him off campus or out of the shower facilities.
A grand jury investigation was not convened until the spring of 2008 based upon claims of alleged victims, nine years AFTER Sandusky's retirement from football.
In December of last year, Mike McQueary witnessed an act of sexual abuse by Sandusky in a Penn State shower room. This was now over 10 years AFTER Sandusky's retirement from football. McQueary had no legal obligation to attempt to stop this sex act already in progress at that time, which would have involved an embarrassing confrontation with his friend and former mentor Sandusky, or to immediately report the incident to police. In America, citizens are not required to "turn in" other citizens to the police. The police are not God. They are public servants. America is not Nazi Germany. Each citizen must decide for himself or herself the best course to follow in any given set of circumstances. McQueary, after discussing the matter with his father, decided that the best course to take was to report the matter to the head coach Joe Paterno the next day. Paterno then discussed the situation with the university president, which led to Sandusky's turning over his locker room keys and having his shower privileges revoked. All this time, the grand jury investigation was still in progress until the indictments were issued last week.
How do our vindictive, self-righteous media experts and pundits on FOX, CNN and other networks, including some know-it-all ex-prosecutors, know that this was a worse result than what would have happened if Sandusky were immediately arrested and held without bail, for which they blame Penn State and its coaching staff for obstructing following the locker room incident last December? Have not they done as much or more irreparable harm to America over the last ten years than Sandusky has done to his victims?
