Like it or not, assistant football coaches attracted to young boys make outstanding coaches ready to go to the limit when necessary. It is something that runs in the genes, and is baked in the cake. How they handle their disordered sexual proclivities is up to them, not the head coach or athletic director.
Joe Paterno made the right call in keeping Sandusky's behavior under wraps. This was definitely not about money. Paterno quietly retired Sandusky because to do otherwise would have ruined Penn State, making it overnight the Pee Wee Herman of the Big Ten football league. Likewise, the graduate assistant who discovered one of Sandusky's shower room antics acted responsibly by first talking about it with his father, and then reporting it to Paterno. Attempting to intervene through "
coitus interruptus" would have again allowed one bad apple to destroy the whole barrel. Once the bell is rung, it can never be un-rung.
Julius Caesar, perhaps the greatest military leader of all time, was a known pedophile at a time when pedophilia was socially acceptable in the ancient world. Jerry's name and physical features show his soul kinship with Caesar, Sandusky being a germanized Polish name from a bygone era when braveness and acumen were at a premium to protect the West from barbarian invasions. It has even been reported that Sandusky played a game with his young male accomplices called "Polish bowling" or "Polish soccer" the object of which is to shoot balls from rolled up tape into plastic or styrofoam cups.
After Paterno was canned, some Penn State students expressed their outrage by overturning on campus a film crew vehicle belonging to a CBS affiliate. This was a logical response to the way in which Paterno and the university have been unfairly pilloried in mainstream media.
