What does it mean that the chickens are coming home to roost in America? To put it bluntly, man can only mock and disregard God for so long. Then, at the very moment that man thinks in his heart that he has cheated God and gotten away with it, he then suffers the consequences of his actions.
There are many who simply lack faith in a Supreme Being and are trying to live as best they can. Then there are those who for whatever reason reject the authority of God and choose to deny the existence of God. If their primary motivation is greed, they become the shysters, hucksters, swindlers and con-artists within society at large. These people willingly choose evil over good.
The problem with the capitalistic system is not that it makes people greedy, but rather that it rewards greedy people above those who are virtuous. In this way, capitalism unjustly rewards vice. So people who have chosen evil over good can think that they have gotten away with something when in reality they are only deluding themselves.
Laws are made to protect people. When we legalize something that is evil, such as killing human beings, the protections built into society are weakened. The people who exploit these weaknesses within society think that they are getting away with something, but in reality it is only a matter of time before they are brought to justice before God. In the meantime, the weaknesses which evildoers cause have a dislocating effect. This acts as a motivation for restoring the lost order within society and within the cosmos. The economic dislocation is an effect of evil within society, rather than something bad in itself. It may actually be a good thing in bringing about justice. Of course this will mean an end to the free ride for those who have chosen to exalt themselves above God. Truth will reign, and many of us will have to bring the swindlers in society to justice before economic order is again restored. This will take sacrifice. We cannot expect that life will proceed business as usual.
